Why Bhadhram exists

What Bhadhram means

Bhadhram is a Malayalam word (ഭദ്രം) that means safe. That word guides every choice we make: what the cloth is made of, how it’s coloured, who makes it, and how many pieces we make.

Why we started

Bhadhram started with a simple thought: what if clothing could be made from something other than plastic?

From that question came a wish to create clothes that are safe for the people who make them, for the people who wear them, and for the earth at last where they reach.

Our co-founder Subadra studied climate change adaptation and has worked on circular textile waste management and pollution projects. She has seen how much clothing is overproduced, dyed with harsh chemicals and thrown away. She has also always loved design. Bhadhram is where those two things meet.

Why we started

How we make it

It starts with the cloth. Each piece’s page tells you exactly what it’s made of, so you always know what you’re wearing.

Then comes the colour, and all of it comes from natural dyes. The dyeing is done by hand by our partners in India and a non-profit organisation in Keralam (Kerala) that creates work for people with disabilities.

Finally, the stitching. Nothing is sewn until you order. Only then does your piece get cut and stitched by local artisans in Keralam, made for you instead of waiting on a shelf.

From Keralam to Sweden

The cloth comes from India’s weaving hubs, in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Bengal. The hands that sew it belong to Keralam. But the people we make it for are far away, in Sweden, where Akhil lives and works. We wanted to carry a piece of India’s craft to people in Gothenburg and beyond who like to know how their clothes came to be.

Who we are

The people behind Bhadhram

Subadra

Subadra

Co-founder

Subadra is an environmental professional who looks after design, social media and production. After working in the pollution sector, she couldn’t stop thinking about what fashion does to our planet, and she dreamed of clothes that are gentle on people and the earth. For a long time it stayed just a dream, until Akhil came into her life and she finally knew how to begin. Bhadhram is that dream, made real.

Akhil Marath Dayalan

Akhil Marath Dayalan

Co-founder

Akhil is an AI engineer who looks after sales in Sweden and everything technical, including this website. He saw how deeply Bhadhram mattered to Subadra, and how much Swedes care about sustainability, and he knew this was worth building. He joined her dream with all his heart and helped turn it into something real.

Where we are now

This is where it begins: a first, small collection, each piece sewn to order. Come meet the pieces at our showing on 6 and 7 November, or pre-book one online.
